Udaipur murder: Cops say defendant traveled to Karachi in 2014, was in touch with Pakistan phone numbers
Rajasthan’s Minister of State for Home Affairs, Rajendra Singh Yadav, claimed on Wednesday that one of those accused of Udaipur case visited Karachi, Pakistan in 2014. The Director General of Police, ML Lather, added that the accused went to visit the office of “Dawat e Islami” in Karachi.
Ghouse Mohammad “went to Karachi in 2014 and spent about 45 days there. Then in 2018-19, he also had trips to Arab countries and visited Nepal a few times. Over the past 2-3 years he has made calls to 8-10 phone numbers from Pakistan,” Yadav said.
“The crime they committed is not one that could have been committed by an ordinary man. So the NIA has filed a complaint and their network will be uncovered and the culprits will be imprisoned,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said whether or not the accused had links to national or international agencies “will be revealed”. Shortening his visit to Jodhpur, the CM reached Jaipur on Wednesday and chaired a law and order meeting with senior state officials at noon.
Meanwhile, speaking to reporters, DGP ML Lather said “interrogation so far revealed that they were associated with an organization named Dawat e Islami” and that one of them, Ghouse Mohammad, “was in constant contact with other members of the organization”.
On Tuesday, Mohammad Riyaz and Ghouse had entered Kanhaiya Lal’s tailor’s shop in Udaipur under the guise of giving measurements for clothes, but hacked him to death for allegedly sharing the suspended chief’s objectionable comments about Prophet Mohammad. of the BJP, Nupur Sharma.
“Ghouse Mohammad had gone to visit Dawat e Islami in Karachi in 2014. On paper, his mission is to preach religious practices and propagate the sect in particular. They have no office in Rajasthan. In India, they have an office in Kanpur and head offices in Mumbai and Delhi,” the DGP said.
On Wednesday, the NIA re-registered the FIR in the case. The original FIR, and then the NIA FIR, were filed under IPC Articles 302 (murder), 452 (entry into home after preparation for injury, assault, or undue duress), 34 (acts done by multiple persons in pursuit of common intention), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on religious grounds, etc., and committing acts prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony), 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration), 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage the religious feelings of any class by insulting their religion or religious beliefs) as well as sections 16, 18 and 20 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The DGP said that given the nature of the case “and in accordance with the instructions of the Chief Minister, this case has been treated as an ‘act of terror’ from the beginning and therefore a case has been filed in under the UAPA. In this regard, the NIA has been informed and its assistance has been requested.
NIA officials left for Udaipur on Tuesday evening and arrived on Wednesday morning, and joined the investigation. The DGP added that “as this is a planned offence, it has been transferred to the NIA while the Rajasthan Police will support (the investigation).”
The DGP also indicated that apart from the two main defendants, three others “who are known to the defendants” were detained.
On the merits of the two main defendants, Lather said that “Mohammad Riyaz worked as a welder while the other person did menial work. So far, no criminal history has been found for any of them.
Additionally, Dhanmandi Police Station SHO, Govind Singh and ASI Balu Ram have been suspended. Dhanmandi Police Station had filed an FIR against Kanhaiya on June 10, based on the complaint of a certain Nazim Ahmed, for allegedly offending religious feelings. Police had arrested Kanhaiya on June 11, before he was released on bail by the court on June 12.
Balu Ram was the investigator in the case and police brokered peace between the two sides on June 15, when Kanhaiya Lal sought police protection following alleged threats from Nazim, but later withdrew it. late after the deal.
However, the DGP said no link between Nazim and the two perpetrators of Kanhaiya’s murder has yet been found, although police are still investigating the case.
“There is a post-Nupur situation and a pre-Nupur situation. Given the charged atmosphere, the SHO did not read the situation properly and the legal action that should have been taken was not taken. As a result, SHO and ASI have been suspended and ministerial action will be taken. Additionally, action will also be taken against others if laxity is found at any level. No one will be spared,” the DGP said.
The DGP also said that according to the investigation so far, the two main defendants had not met Kanhaiya before. During questioning, one of the defendants claimed that he made the weapon used to assassinate Kanhaiya Lal himself.
Meanwhile, with the state on high alert, violent protests were reported in Bhim in Rajasamand district, where police had to resort to tear gas to disperse the crowds. A police officer was seriously injured with a sword and is currently undergoing treatment, the DGP said.
