‘This is for Ukrainians everywhere’: Newmarket rally for Ukraine vigil on Sunday
Multi-faith prayer vigil begins at 1 p.m. at Riverwalk Commons
A multi-faith prayer vigil in support of Ukraine will take place in Newmarket on Sunday 6 March.
The event, organized by faith communities, Mayor John Taylor and council, will take place at 1 p.m. Riverwalk Commons at 200 Doug Duncan Driveway
Reverend Linda Wheler of Trinity United Church first raised the idea with the mayor and the two worked with community religious leaders to organize the event.
“The Ukrainian people are under daily attack and their country is in danger. Every community in the world must make it clear that we stand with Ukraine and that the world will not tolerate the actions of Vladimir Putin. The Ukrainian people and Ukrainians have need to know that they are not alone. Their community is with them and the global community is with them. Everyone needs to send their support and prayers to the people of Ukraine at this perilous time,” Taylor said.
Councilor Bob Kwapis said he was happy that Newmarket could organize this event for the community.
“As a Polish-Canadian, born in Poland, I have strong feelings and a personal connection to these horrific events unfolding in Ukraine. This prayer vigil, open to all in support of Ukraine, can help me and my family deal with the strong emotions we are currently experiencing,” he said in an email.
Liliya Khapko, creator of Ukrainians from York and Simcoe Regions Facebook group, said she was so happy to hear about the event and that it’s important not just for Ukrainians to attend, but for everyone in Newmarket.
“I think it shows support…It’s not just for Ukrainians here, I think it’s for Ukrainians all over the world…It makes them feel cared for , let everyone think of them, pray for them.”
Prior to the event, the Ukrainian flag flies from the Peace Park flagpole on Cane Parkway.
Speakers are still being finalized. In addition to Reverend Wheeler, representatives from the Chabad Newmarket Jewish Center and the Newmarket Islamic Center will be present and an Aboriginal blessing will be given.
The vigil will begin at 1:00 p.m. and everyone is welcome to attend.
