State-wide investigation into clergy and abuse of religious leaders received nearly 180 reports

The state’s Justice Department said it had received nearly 180 reports of abuse by religious leaders or mismanagement of abuse complaints by religious organizations.
Attorney General Josh Kaul released an update on Wednesday on the state-wide investigation into clergy and religious leader abuse against his office launched in April.
The investigation was hampered by some Catholic dioceses who did not want to participate in the investigation, with some leaders claiming that previous cases of sexual abuse had already been examined by judicial authorities.
As of July, the investigation had received more than 100 reports. On Wednesday, the DOJ provided some details on the 80 additional reports received since this summer.
In A press release On Wednesday, Kaul said about 80% of reports received by his office were about abuse. The remaining 20 percent concerned how a religious organization responded to reports of abuse.
The update indicates that reports of abuse involved clergy and leaders of several religious organizations, as well as abuse unrelated to faith groups. The statement also said reports implicated “suspected assailants from every Catholic diocese in Wisconsin.”
Kaul said in the statement that the reports came from people of a wide range of ages, from under 18 to people over 75.
Almost 40 reports came from people who had not previously reported suspected abuse to law enforcement or a religious authority.
âThank you to the courageous people who have stepped forward to provide information about abuse by clergy and religious leaders,â Kaul said in a statement. “This review aims to help bring healing to survivors and help stop future damage, and we continue to encourage survivors and others with information to report.”
The DOJ continues to encourage survivors, family, friends and advocates to report to the agency in line or by phone at 1-877-222-2620.
