Incel culture should be classified as terrorism, prominent human rights lawyer warns
Incel groups “glorify” violence against women and should be classified as terrorists, a prominent human rights lawyer warned.
Dr Charlotte Proudman, an award-winning family law attorney, said incel groups are a growing problem, but authorities mistakenly view the incidents as “isolated ones” rather than joining the two.
An incel, which stands for a combination of the words “involuntary” and “single,” is a heterosexual man who desperately wants to have sex with women but does not do so, thus placing the blame on women for their own inability to bond. sexual relations. .
Speaking at an event on violence against women organized by The independent On Thursday, Dr Proudman said belief in incel culture was a critical factor in the massacre by a gunman Jake davison in Plymouth in August.
Davison, a self-proclaimed Incel, shot dead six people in the south Devon coast port town – with his mother and a three-year-old daughter among his victims – before pointing the gun at his own head.
After the tragedy, it emerged that Davison had previously uploaded videos posing as an “incel” and lamenting the fact that he had not lost his virginity as a teenager. The Davison wave of murders was the deadliest mass shooting in the UK in over a decade.
“The Incel culture played a huge role in its murderous decisions,” Dr Proudman said during the panel discussion moderated by The independentMaya Oppenheim’s female correspondent. âIt’s not just him. There is a lot of people.”
The lawyer noted that incel groups are particularly prevalent in the United States – adding that it is an ideology that sees men claiming their “right to sex” and expressing their frustrations that women ” supposedly refuse them “. âHow dare we,â Ms. Proudman joked.

âInvoluntary celibacy has been going on for 30 years,â added Dr Proudman, an expert on violence against women and girls. âIt has been going on for decades. In my opinion, it is a form of terrorism.
Dr Proudman, who was joined by Cristel Amiss, longtime activist of the Women Against Rape and Black Women’s Rape Action Project and Rebecca Hitchin of the End Violence Against Women Coalition, said incel culture must be integrated into conceptions of the radicalization and fundamentalism.
The lawyer, who advocates for victims of domestic violence to obtain protection in family courts, added: considered terrorists.
“So why is it not the same with misogynists?” So why isn’t it the same for the men who have these radical conceptions of hate women, who have become a glamorous subculture? It is to glorify this violence.
âThese types of murders are considered one-off, isolated incidents, they are not linked. They are not seen as part of a larger movement that is happening online.
Dr Proudman warned that incel culture is a “huge problem”, concluding: “It must be defined as terrorism in short”.
Incel’s men, who are affiliated with neo-Nazi far-right movements, victimize themselves and attribute their lack of sex and romance to problems with society.
Incel communities, which have grown in recent years, have sprung up on Reddit, Facebook, 4chan, and websites created by the incels themselves. Members of the obscure community are pouring misogynistic abuse on all women on online forums, along with vitriolic comments about women who reject them – even while plotting against them.
