Four people arrested in Azamgarh for allegedly trying to convert people to Christianity
Four people, including two women, were arrested in Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday for allegedly trying to illegally convert people to Christianity, The Indian Express reported.
The defendants have been identified as Rakesh Kumar, Ajay Kumar, Reeta Devi and Geeta, officials said.
Police said Delhi-based Rakesh Kumar lived in rented accommodation in the Azamgarh Andakhor area, where he and the other defendants used to call people and convince them to convert to Christianity, reported The Indian Express. Rakesh Kumar rented the place two months ago.
“We have investigated the complaint and concluded that the allegations are true,” Bilariyaganj station officer Vijay Prakash said. The Indian Express. “During the investigation, we will check how many people the defendants were able to convert.”
The defendants lured people with money and other things into adopting Christianity, he alleged.
Praveen Kumar, a resident, filed a complaint in connection with the case.
The development came two days after 26 people were arrested in a similar incident under the state’s anti-conversion law in Fatehpur district.
On Friday, a raid was carried out on a church in the Hariharganj neighborhood of Fatehpur after police received a tip-off from members of a Hindutva organization, The Indian Express reported.
Himanshu Dixit, a member of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, had informed the police that about 90 Hindus were in the process of converting to Christianity, India time reported.
“We have 35 people named as accused in the FIR [first information report] who are believed to be members of the Evangelical Church of India,” Fatehpur Police Superintendent Rajesh Singh said. India time. “Efforts are underway to identify the remaining 20.”
