Climate Activists Announce More Local Programs for Nationwide March to Earth Day Effort | Local News
Local climate change activists have announced a slate of programs for the coming weeks.
The group, part of a nationwide effort called March Forth to Earth Day, has held Friday noon rallies at Civic Center Park since March 4 to draw attention to the need to protect our air and water and the environment in general.
The Friday events have been well attended so far, despite the weather, noted local organizer Marieta Huff.
“On March 4, we had cold weather, but 18 people showed up and more stopped to talk to us, and we were all excited,” Huff said.
The group continued its environmental awareness efforts, even in very cold weather, Huff said. In the event of rain, they will meet inside Immanuel United Methodist Church, 5410 Sheridan Rd.
Over the next few weeks, events and programs include a Family Day rally in the park, an Earth Day celebration at Gateway Technical College, and an invitation for faith leaders to march to the Municipal Building in support of the climate change.

“The goal is to empower people to think about alternative, renewable energy sources,” Huff said. “We also need to realize the damage oil does to the environment. We cannot do without it, but we must invest in finding alternative sources.
