A moment with new Washington cornerback Jordan Perryman

Jordan Perryman is another one of those Big Sky football players who walked into Husky Stadium in the past six months and immediately felt like he belonged.

Unlike the Montana football team, the cornerback isn’t there to embarrass the University of Washington, only to get them back on track.

Perryman has fitted right in since arriving as a transfer from UC Davis, so much so that he has run with the first unit since spring training began, which fellow newcomer Michael Penix Jr. ., Aaron Dumas and Cam Bright did not.

As for that upset of Montana last September in Seattle, Perryman remembers seeing the surprisingly thin result, 13-7 in favor of the Grizzlies, and how he felt about it.

“I was really excited for them,” he said. “They’ve come out and proven themselves.”

So now this first-team All-Big Sky corner is part of a big college football machine for Perryman’s fifth and final season. Kalen DeBoer’s staff praised this guy who immediately earned respect with a hard-nosed approach.

When asked why he came to UW, the sympathetic Perryman almost took it as a blasphemous question, turning with a wide arm, pointing to Husky Stadium and saying, “You can see for yourself -even – it’s beautiful here.”

Perryman hails from the same school that produced Chris Petersen as a quarterback, long before he became the Husky football coach from 2014-2019, but Petersen had nothing to do with that personnel transfer.

After entering the portal, Perryman received a call from new UW defensive backs coach Juice Brown to see if he might be interested in the Huskies.

The presumption is that the connection with Perryman was helped by Paul Creighton, who is now a quality UW coach and special teams coordinator, spent the last two seasons with DeBoer at Fresno State as a tight ends coach and six seasons at UC Davis before that.

Either way, the cornerback grew up in Hanford, Calif., a town that decades ago sent Mark Lee to the Huskies to become an all-conference defenseman, punt returner record and an NFL player.

Perryman arrives at the UW after splitting an 8-4 season capped by UC Davis advancing to the FCS playoffs against South Dakota State. He had 63 tackles, one interception and 12 missed passes.

The Huskies hope he’ll help smooth the transition from last year’s NFL-bound starting cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Kyler Gordon to something just as productive in the high school.

Perryman seems confident enough in his abilities to defend himself. When asked if he thought it was necessary to come to the UW to reach the NFL himself, he replied, “I was convinced that I could have made it to Davis too.”
