2022: Happy New Year, Bad New Year
From a human point of view, it’s hard to think of the New Year as a good year. Most countries pass legislation that increasingly secularizes institutions and expands the availability of abortion, assisted reproduction, surrogacy and euthanasia.
What follows is a reflection of Fr. Alain Lorans.
Can we wish each other a holy year 2022, in the face of such decadence? Yes, if for us this year is the occasion to strongly reaffirm our faith beyond the innumerable vicissitudes: happy new year, bad year, God is there! Whatever trials overwhelm us, God is present!
This is not happy autosuggestion, an attempt to appease self-persuasion against exasperating evidence. It is an act of faith, as a Carthusian tells us: âThe future is not ours. Life is not what we make of it; God alone directs its course.
âAll we can do is accept with confidence this direction that is overflowing with love. Let us not see too much what are the men, nor the things, nor the events. The spectacle is so often disheartening. Let us look at the One who sovereignly regulates all these movements and who makes them work together in an infinite plan of love.
âLet us go deeper and deeper into these conceptions of faith, which alone are intelligent and true. These are the very views of God. In all that He does or allows, He sees and wants only His love. Let’s do like him.
âObviously, appearances are disconcerting. The world is full of evil and hate. How can you see love in such opposing manifestations? We don’t see it; we believe. To believe is to see in the light of God; it is relying on Him who tells us: “The eyes of your body, your reason see evil.” But these views are superficial. The foundation of everything is love.
âWe see that faith requires a very heavy sacrifice; but we also see that it gives us a security and a peace that we could call infinite, since it is based on the very word of God. We have the deep secret of Christian tranquility in the midst of the worst events. Events are transitory; the word of God is everlasting. (Dom Augustin Guillerand, Carthusian silence)
And elsewhere this religious affirms: âThere is no remedy for our temporary ills except in the eternal love of God for us. All our sorrows come from our request for joy and goods too narrow and too short for the immensity of our hearts. (Carthusian voice)
Then yes! In this light, good or bad year, God will be there! At this level, God will be present every day of 2022.
